The California Association of Latino Independent Facilitators

Advancing Excellence, Leadership, and Equity in Independent Facilitation

The California Association of Latino Independent Facilitators (THE CALIF) is a statewide professional association dedicated to supporting, developing, and elevating Independent Facilitators (IFs) who serve individuals and families participating in California’s Self-Determination Program (SDP). Our mission is to strengthen the quality, professionalism, cultural responsiveness, and accessibility of Independent Facilitation while expanding opportunities for Latino communities and other historically underserved populations. Inspired by the growing need for culturally competent support within the Self-Determination Program, THE CALIF serves as a collaborative network where Independent Facilitators can learn, connect, share best practices, and grow professionally. Our work aligns with the principles of self-determination, person-centered planning, community inclusion, and ethical practice.

Our Vision

To create a statewide network of highly trained, ethical, and culturally responsive Independent Facilitators who empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live self-directed lives and achieve their personal goals.

Our Mission

THE CALIF is committed to:

  • Promoting excellence in Independent Facilitation.
  • Supporting the growth and professional development of Independent Facilitators.
  • Increasing access to Self-Determination Program resources and opportunities.
  • Advancing culturally and linguistically responsive services.
  • Building leadership within Latino and diverse communities.
  • Strengthening ethical and person-centered practices.
  • Creating opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and innovation.

Why THE CALIF Matters

Independent Facilitators play a critical role within California’s Self-Determination Program by helping participants understand their options, navigate systems, develop person-centered plans, coordinate supports, and advocate for their goals. As the Self-Determination Program continues to grow, so does the need for qualified, well-trained, and culturally responsive facilitators who understand the diverse communities they serve.

THE CALIF exists to strengthen that workforce while creating a community of practice that promotes collaboration, integrity, accountability, and continuous learning.
